Is it a starfield with something in the foreground? I'm not sure how to begin.

just have fun with it. i had know idea what i wanted when i took it, just something t experiement with i guess. i would prefer the tree was silhouetted, but you can do whatever
JDubgirl, when did you take this? Is this strait up? If so, I think you might have an edge on galaxy in the photo, kind of in between the trees. I think this is the Andromeda galaxy.

Ya, I think that is Andromeda. There is too many stars in the photo to help me determine what is what, but I am almost sure that is Andromeda. It's visible to the naked eye under very dark skies.

well, look up Kalispell MT, it might or might not be a big city to you. we are about 10 miles away form it, but i was facing the mountains, kalispell was behind me. its hundreds of miles before you get a city in that direction
Kalispell is about the same size of the city I live in, Starkville Mississippi. I am jealous of your night skies. Here is a light pollution map for your area: //www.cleardarksky.com/lp/KlsllMTlp.html?Mn=astronomy . The black areas are where you can achieve very very dark skies. I was wondering where you lived because I couldn't see any hint of any light pollution in your photo.
Is your photo in B&W? At that exposure length you might be able to start to get subtle colors out of different stars.
Do you know the constellation Orion? In my opinion, tt's a great constellation to take photos of. It has some brilliant colored stars and a nebula that can be seen without a telescope.
its actually one of the only constellations i can recognize lol. i shall trry and find it next time i do a night shoot. btw, with the map you showed is north up?
Yep, north is up. If you are going to take photos of Orion, try and get some where south of the city, that way you aren't taking your photo through the light pollution of the city. If you take your photos through light pollution you are going to get a nasty red haze in all of your photos that is a pain to reduce. To the south of my back yard I have a church with what seems like 847664 light that light up the sky to my south and I have the city of Starkville to my north. The lights drive me crazy... Hehehe...
well we live out to the east of town, so its not relaly a problem. i just cant shoot facing west:) plus i like getting the mountains in so its no restriction for me
I'm so jealous. It's so obnoxious here that I haven't attempted astrophotography in a long time because of the light pollution and I don't feel like lugging a bunch of telescope gear out to the middle of no where. I really shouldn't be complaining since I could live in a major metropolitan area.
Ha, I just posted a similar photo a week or two back.
Not much of any editing, taken in the middle of nowhere @ 10,900ft elevation. Wish I had my Sigma 10-20 when I was up there.
