I tried to change my profile picture, and on my preferences page, it shows the one I want...but on my profile it still shows the old one. A sniveling and stupid complaint, I know, but i recently decided that the profile pic I had there was undoubtedly a horrible picture (it has my face in it), so it must go.

hold down the shift key and refresh your page - it will clear the cache and your pic will update.
Have you tried holding down the shift key while clicking the refresh button? It may be that an old version of the page is cached on your machine.
When I look at yoru rofile page I am seeing a "legs only" shot. Is this your new or old photo?
