I would think that a lot of people would mark you down for showing any details whatsoever. I wouldn't necessarily agree with that approach, but I'm sure it will be the case.

That`s what I`m thinking too, I got a couple of pictures and one looks better with some detail showing (I think) plus I`m not sure if the pictures work totally dark.
Do Silhouettes have to be black or dark with no details in them, or would some detail be seen.

Judging by the wording of the challenge..there should be leeway for some detail to show.

It doesn't matter - whatever looks good and qualifies as a silhouette in the eyes of the voters is okay.
I'm sure there will be many excellent submissions both with and without detail.
That's true but there are always those that will "look" for things to mark an image down for. My advice, air on the side of caution unless your image is that outstanding that a little detail won't matter.
When I read the Silhouette explanation in the rules:

I see the word " much" which means it can contain some detail, and I see the word " part" which tells me there can be other areas in your photo that are not in silhouette and can contain detail.
I hope voters read the instructions too, and see the way it is worded, because I believe most of the photos entered in this challenge will follow these descriptions....I know my photo does.

Several photos in the current challenge indicate the photogs DID read the rules. I personally LIKE the photos in which there is detail AND silhouettes.

There are photos however, where there is silhouette as part of the composition but it overpowered by other parts of the composition; these tend to look like poorly exposed photographs rather than strong examples of silhouette.
