I'm getting quite a few comments on my image to the effect that
'you are lucky I looked at the large version before voting, I was going to give you a low score from the thumbnail'
As far as I know it's not possible to vote from the thumbnail on the first pass.
After you've voted on an image, you can revise the vote from the thumb, but if you have'nt voted on the image yet, you have no choice but to bring up the full-size image, as it should be.
I would sure hope that people are taking the time to look at the full photo. It is their loss if they do not because they would miss seeing some wonderful photos.
Thumbnails can be deceiving. Not all they are cracked up to be!
I think some judge if they will vote on a shot by how the thumbnail looks. :(

Ah ha! Now Gordons' commentor's phrasing makes sense. I guess I wold have never thought about this, since I nearly always vote on all images.
Which begs the question: why show the thumbs at all prior to a vote being cast?
The site code is already constructed to present the full images in random order, and using the thumbs to screen the entries defeats that, big time. I say, get rid of it.

Which is why (IMHO) thumbnails should be hidden until you've finished voting. When you click "Vote", you should be taken to your first unrated image at full-size. "Picking and choosing" what to vote on seems unfair. You should simply vote on the images in the order presented. Once you've finished rating all of the images, then you could see the "thumbnail view" and adjust your votes if desired...
It like when you take a shot and look at your lcd screen. "Wow it looks nice", then get home and check it out on your monitor. "Out of focus", "Bad lighting", etc.

I think it means that the thumbnail makes people decide what the score is already (since there are a ton of entries) before tehy see the larger image. But then again, that's how these public voting things are :)

I like this idea. There are some that I would just prefer not to see again, but if I don't cast a vote they keep coming back in the random selection.
As for why have thumbnails at all: I like to get an overview of the range of photos before I begin voting. If I know, for example, that there are 20 or more wagon wheels to vote on I may leave some room to improve my vote after the first pass.
