I have some areas of shadow on a portrait which are very gradual. When I have it open in PS Elements, The shading/shadowing look great. When I open it in Neat Image to work on the skin a little, the shaded areas look very weird. Instead of gradual shading I end up with bands of less gradual shades that look odd. Using neat image would then probably make those "bands" even more distinct.

Anyone know what I'm referring to and how to fix it?

That usually happens when Levels/Curves or other similiar Adjustment layers are pushed beyond the suitable limitations of the colours in question. This is more noticeable on blank areas like skies.

It's called banding. Make sure you are still working in 16 bit in elements, that's the easy thing to check/deal with. There are articles and articles and articles about how to overcome banding issues in photoshop if you google around. I have some shots where the banding appears the instant I size the image down even slightly, and none of the proscribed tricks seem to prevent it from happening.

Not much adjustment done to this particular area. Why would it look so different in PS than in Neat Image?

Banding...I knew there was a word for it, but couldnt come up with it. Makes sense.

I will look it up and see what I can find - thank you!
