So, I put notes on some pics that I felt were shot outdoors and TO ME this challenge was intended for indoor studio portraits. Someone replied that outside is their studio and although I have always felt that by definition the word Studio means "room" it got me to thinking perhaps I am off on this viewpoint. I would love to hear your thoughts on this and if swayed by majority than I will go back and re-score my voting.
Thanks - off to a quick flag football game but can't wait to read the replies.
No agreement between you and them is necessary or required. Since you're nice enough not to immediately drop their vote to a 1 for arguing with you over your comment, why not just part ways and leave it be. I'm sure their definition of studio will earn them the score it deserves.
The way I look at it is what is the purpose of a studio? It's to have maximum control over lighting, background, etc, right? If so I don't care if they shot it on the moon so long as they controlled all the elements. For example, shooting outside in broad daylight would be perfectly fine with me so long as they overpowered sun with their artificial lighting or at the very least altered the sunlight in some way so that it suited the shot. So in a nutshell if you created your own light/altered existing light and not simply used "found light" then you are ok. I think it would be silly to simply demand that it be shot indoors when for all you know it could have been shot in a hotel lobby and not an actual studio. Of course just my opinion.
If you really want to get nitpicky, a studio can be defined as a photographers workspace. So outdoors can technically be a studio. But I think for the purposes of this challenge, studio means indoors with controlled light. And that's how I'm voting.

Oh I would never do that (dropping a score - far too many trolls out there in my opinion). I did appreciate them defending their viewpoint and wanted to make sure where I was coming from was, if not a consensus, that I wasn't in left field. I also feel good knowing that although I am sure my score doesn't "help" it didn't hurt them for sure.

It is easy to say "the world is my studio" and sure, it is justifiable, I accept that. But for a DPC challenge topic "Studio Color Portrait" I think that is jumping outside the box a little too far and a low score is definitely predetermined. After all this is DPC and jumping out of the box doesn't reward you with a high score, found that out the hard way :)

Well I'm sitting at a 6.83 in "the world is my studio" shot. The thing is I doubt anybody can tell. ;)
So, if you have a film set, and you shoot a film outside (on the street, in the park, etc.), and you bring all the fancy incy mincy lights and control the lighting to the maximum, are you shooting in a studio or no!?
I say no.
The directors of photography I know also say no.
Actors say no.
So, I guess it's no.

then you disguised it well.... looking forward to seeing your entry :)
So, why bother with the challenge descriptions at all!?
anyway, I don't care if it's taken uderwater but I think everybody knows what a studio is...
btw, do we still remember the argument on the 2 second exposure challenge...:-)

The thing is if someone is going to be firm on it needing to be a real studio then it better be an actual studio and not just some place indoors otherwise that's no different than an outdoor shot, IMO.
Personally, I wish I had a studio. It would have made my shot less challenging to do.

I agree to some extent. I love to be outside the box when it comes to interpreting a challenge, I just wouldn't like like to fool the voters using the fact that they a priori trust me.
