It is the body cap with a hole in it. lol That is about it. Really tiny hole btw. In fact I am going to try and find a way to make the hole even smaller if I can.
I lost the link that shows how to make it, but I will try to find it. Simple really. Take the body cap, and heat a needle up so that it will make a nice small little hole. (first shot of the apple) Then what I did was stick a piece of tape over the hole and made a smaller hole in the tape and noticed that it was a bit sharper. I am going to experiment a bit and see if I can get a little better result, but I think this could work nicely for the right shot.
This is too fun. I took a small piece of tin foil, poked a tiny pin hole in it, then taped it over my P&S camera lens. Here's the result straight from the camera. A bit better lighting and it would be pretty cool!
I used do regular pin holes with an oatmeal box (with a tiny hole of course) with some photo paper in it. Then process it in the dark room...oh the old black and white days...hehe glad I dont have to breathe those chemicals anymore. :)
Here is a try outside. It was windy, dark and all sorts of other problems. I hand held for a quick shot and came back inside. Although the product is not that great, it turned on some ideas. I cannot wait for some upcoming shoots. Too bad all of my ideas would not be allowed in the challenges.
From what I understand of my limited knowledge of optics:
The thicker the cap, the wider the hole can be and still work.
Also the thicker the cap, the wider the hole or longer the focal length must be.
The wider the hole, the more blurred the center will appear.
I so wish a company made a custom lens kit for us who like to have fun with our cameras, maybe a kit with a series of tubes with different brand camera mounts, and then an assortment of different lens elements to combine in different ways.

However what I had meant specifically was kits of glass lens elements that you build manual focus lenses from, like LEGO blocks. Would be a nice thing to have. :)

It's just as easy to do it yourself with a spare body cap. Costs much less too.
FWIW, I used a beading needle to punch the hole in the aluminum foil. They're about the narrowest needles you can get. I'm definitely interested in the Lensbaby pinhole thingy.
A pinhole challenge sounds like fun, but I'm not sure that I could crank them out for thirty days! Maybe shoot during a couple of weekends and then post your best 5. Sort of like the walkabout challenges we used to do.
If you want to make a very small hole, try using a single bristle from a wire brush. They can easily be pulled from the brush with a pair of pliers if you just pull one at a time.
