Well, I'd like to give the long exposure challenge a shot as it's something I've never done but I'm rubbish with camera settings; I don't know what settings to change to create the desired exposure. The ISO, the apeture, whatever; I wondered if it was shutter speed but I'm just not sure. Can anyone please tell me the adjustment I need to make to create a longer exposure? Thanks.

ISO - As low as possible to reduce the noise.
Shutter - low...ie. preferably in the seconds...the longer the more obvious it will be to the viewer/voter.
Aperture - All dependent on your subject and amount of light.

Remember....give and take....If you give to one of the above settings, you need to take from one of the other two. Each of the above controls light. But each also controls another area.

ISO - Grain/Noise
Shutter - Crispness/Movement Blur
Aperture - Depth of Field

So look at your priority...do you want a wide depth of field, fast or slow shutter or no noise...then set that priority setting and alter the other two to compensate and get the result you want.

I'm still getting to grips with my camera and I'm hopeless at determining the right settings for different conditions; I think it spoils a lot of my shots in fact. Thanks a lot for the speedy reply and suggestions :)

You can use either the shutter speed (slow) or the aperture (large number - small opening) for a long exposure. This is the link to your camera manual.

Page 55 through 57 of manual.....Set the dial on your camera to "A" for aperture priority, or "S" for shutter priority. Press the +/- button to activate the option to change either and then the use up/down arrows above and below the "menu/OK" button to change the shutter speed or aperture.
