They are just ribbons that people make up and hand out. Sometimes people don't always think that the top 3 should have won so they hand out their own ribbons.
They are awards that people created and hand out to challenge photos they thought were special in some way or underrated. The Posthumous Ribbons are probably the most coveted since they were the first and many respect his opinions.
Posthumous is one of the members that prefers the more artistic and out of the box type of images. He likes to recognize unique approaches to a subject. Some other members also participate in his thread in an effort to give some recognition to those images that were good work, but did not have the broad appeal to score highly. I got one Posthumous Yellow for my "peace" entry, which received a lot of low DNMC votes because many did not see how it related to the subject. Posthumous and a few others understood perfectly what I was conveying. It was my most successful 4.
ok, i noticed a thread with pics that recieved these awards... sooo basically if i never open the thread, then i will never know if i recieved one of these awards?
Posthumous usually lets you know in a comment if he has awarded you one of his coveted ribbons. Not sure about all the others, but I would expect they would. It's a very unofficial, but highly regarded DPC program.

At least, when posthumous hands out his ribbons he puts it in a comment. You don't have to go near the thread.
I think that's why some people don't like them... because they are unofficial... since you can make your own, there are really no rules...
I don't think that it really matters to the people doing it how many people like them or don't like them. You can either choose to take them to heart, or ignore them, really.
Personally, they were one of the best ideas I saw in the forums while I was thinking of joining up, and I love the concept. Anything that gets more diversity noticed than the 9 - 12 photos on the front page every week is a bonus in my book.

I agree wholeheartedly with that.
Perhaps in future at some point, I shall create an unofficial ribbon or trophy, purple of course, for all those with undeserving low scores. That is, if I can ever work out how to post those little pictures in the forums! ;)

You could always naw off that fav before I wake up.
