Hello, quick intro: Just signed up to challenge myself to start taking more pics. I have always loved photography but never pursued it more than casually. I'm fresh out of university studies and have a lot more free time now than I used to. Two aunts who are professional photographers, though I don't see them much it was always fun to play around with their equipment.
I am here to practice, practice, practice and to learn more about the art in general. I would like to invest in a nice SLR camera, but want to prove that it would be a good idea before I fork over the cash. So, while I save up I'm going to try to improve my knowledge and skills.
I have been browsing the forums since I joined, but I cannot find information about what challenges, if any, that unpaid members are allowed to participate in? Could somebody direct me to where I can find this info? Greatly appreciated.

Registered users (unpaid members) can submit to one of the two Open challenges that are run each week. These are announced on Wednesday and run for a week. You can find more details about what registered users and paying members can do here: FAQ
When you decide to enter a challenge, make sure to read the challenge rules carefully. They can be found here: Challenge Rules.
There are a lot of posts in the forums around the details of the rules, but if you are still unsure, it never hurts to ask - just check the forum archives because many of the questions you may think of have already been answered at least a few times.
Welcome! It's a really good idea to show off your skills and decide if this is for you before stumping up a small fortune for a camera. I certainly hope you'll enjoy yourself while you're here, best of luck on whichever challenge you choose to participate in first!
By the way, if you go to 'My Home' and then preferences, you can tick a box to have a weekly e-mail sent to you to inform you of the week's new challenges, it's a good way to keep up to date.
