So How many did it take before you got your first ribbon?
If you have none yet( LIKE ME )what is your goal?
I am at 41/42 and stuck on None. But plan on getting there by my 60th entry.
I am at 4 entries and none of those will ribbon (2 are still in voting) but I really want to get at least an HM by my tenth entry.
So much to do and learn but I have a pretty good idea for "product" so if I can just talk everyone else into not entering a shot for that then I can get my ribbon straight away and stop worrying about it ;)
84 challenges and the highest I have done is 5th place with a 6.53. At this point I am really competing against myself. If I nail one on the homepage, that's just unexpected gravy.
IF you want to ribbon as a goal unto itself you need to look at your strengths and see how they can best mesh with what works on DPC. The masses rule here and that will dictate that technically perfect and clean images will generally have an advantage.
There's something to be said about striving to meet an audience's demand, but there's also something to be said about following your own voice. Sometimes the two coincide. Sometimes they don't.
I got a ribbon on my first challenge last year, but was then revoked for not setting the date on my camera (oops!) I then received PM's from several members (who are no longer active) insisting that I had cheated and probably took the picture long ago and tried to get away with it.
After that, I quit DPC for almost a year. I'm back and am not on my 8th-9th challenge. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a ribbon before this year is over!!
I am into my 2nd challenge, and from the comments it seems I am never going to see a ribbon on DPC:-)
I plan to stick around though, and improve, and see.. the first thing to do is to get a DSLR I think.. a normal digicam doesnt seem to help too much with my already weak skills.

Good luck.
The answer to your question is 13.
I loved the way you put it. Experience shows, thanks:-)
Top ten on my 2nd entry, Blue ribbon on my third, then it was another 4 years before my next ribbon.. Seems it might be that long again before I get another.
