The focus definately looks like it's well behind the front row of fish, that probably accounts for most of the strange-lookingness. Is there fire behind the fish? The warm firelight could have played a part in fooling the auto white-balance in your camera. I would expect that to throw a cool tone over the rest of the image. It's hard to judge color, however, without having been there, and without a referance point.
I don't see any color weirdness at all, it looks about right to me, give or take a little warm shift, easily corrected. DOF is a problem, nothing really sharp except the second-tier skewers... All in all a pretty cool picture, an interesting "scene".
You didn't post shooting info about aperture and shutter speed or focal length, so I will guess it at f3.5- 1/125-70mm. For that focal length, the DOF is pretty shallow at 3.5, and focus seems to be behind the front row in the sand under the fish. Skin tones look ok in the background, so WB is not too far from right. The heat rising from the grill may have some to do with the overall weirdness of the sharpness as well.
It's an unusual looking scene.
ETA; A group of horizontal or vertical lines like the sticks in the front row can sometimes fool autofocus. Maybe that is what happened to the focus.
thanks for the replies, there was a stong heat coming from the coals the fish were in, and I guess the sutofocus was fooled. the aperture was about 4.5 a focal length of 150-200
