I've got Labor Day off and the weather report says it should be beautiful. So I'm thinking that I may take my girlfriend down to the Catskills either Sunday or Monday for some hiking/shooting/exploring. From Binghamton I can get to the western edge (near Shinhopple) in just over an hour, which isn't too bad - I don't really want to drive more than another 45 minutes into the park.

Thing is, I've only visited the Catskills once before, at a GTG in the north-central park of the park. Can anyone suggest some sights to see in the southwestern section? Park areas, lakes, waterfalls, hiking trails? I'd love to hear any recommendations!

Hi, Brent. There's not much on that side of the Catskills that I'm aware of. The drive around the Pepacton Reservoir (Rt. 30) is beautiful and offers some great scenic vistas, but I don't know if there's much hiking available there. The land is owned and protected by the NYC Dept. of Environmental Protection (it's their drinking water), so check out their web site //www.nyc.gov/html/dep/html/watershed_protection/home.html for what is and isn't allowed. If you do drive out that way, make sure you drive along the north side of the reservoir as well -- it's back roads, but it's pretty. There's supposed to be some waterfalls over on that side as well, but I'm not sure where -- search some of the New York waterfall sites out there.

Thanks Gary. It doesn't look like there's too much there, compared to the area the GTG was in. I suppose it could be a nice drive, but it'd be more fun to be able to get out and see things. From the look of the link you posted, they don't really approve of such activities around the reservoir.

Anyone else want to chime in?

How about the beaverkill river for some fishing? Also the town of Roscoe is somewhat scenic. Beaverkill State campground used to be a great place to camp until it got flooded.
