We are meeting with a builder next week to go over plans for a new house. The house will be built/done in January.

The house plans call for a 3rd bay garage that is separate from the regular garage (but still attached to the house). We plan to actually not use it as a garage, but a photo studio. It will not have a garage door on it, but will have an outside entrance so clients do not have to go through my house.

There will be access to a bathroom/changing room as well.

I am not sure the dimensions right now (I am thinking about 16x24) , but wanted to get some ideas on approximate sizes of portrait studios. We can modify the plans if we need to.

The room will be used strictly for the studio session. The office will not be in the room, so I can use every bit of space. I was thinking I should hang the strobes from the ceiling instead of using tripods on the floor? to get more space as well.

Also, should the walls be 18% grey all around, or white. I will be able to hang backdrops and paper rolls at the back wall.

Any other thoughts, input on what I should need to customize?

Ooooh sheesh, you want more than one bay. My converted space was a 2 car garage and there is no way I could fit a bathroom in there with everything else we have. Now 3 bays............ :D

I use 2 other areas of my home for Previewing and Office, and another room for props. So the studio... 20X21 is just studio and changing room.

Many cheapo places (walmart, sears, jppenney, etc) get away with 9-14 feet deep..but you don't get full lenght. I want 40 feet long so I can shoot full length with a 200mm lens. Something in between is probably fine.

I was shooting in my basement - 10 or 11 feet wide and about 16 feet long. Full length was tough to do. Width was limiting with teh size of stands and softboxes.
Last month I moved into my garage with more work to go, but have 12 feet wide which is about the min I'd suggest as you will probably want some storage space for props, chairs, etc along the walls so they're easy to get at. I've got about 22 feet long I think and that's aimed at the high key so it works.
I've got things arranged in an L fashion to I have three, could be four, BGs up at any given time. The inside of the L will become the sales room.
