Since nobody cares about an answer to this question I'll give it a go.
The one you intended to enter has a more pleasing feel to it. I think the clearer center and the higher contrast pedal ends agaist the black background work better with only the corner being filled with the subject. But then again it is always subjective. I likley would ahve also given this a six. Overall I don't think you were hurt bad either way.

Actually, the emphasis might well be on the plural. While not generally true on DPC, when I arrange a still life for painting, i would arrange two, three or more objects in a pleasing pattern before I would call the resulting painting a still life. You might also look at examples of still life compositions on line. For example, Cezanne did splendid still life work.
As to your particular image, which in DPC seems to qualify as a still life, I would prefer the one you intended to submit as it is, I think, slightly more balanced in the frame.

That was kind of my point.
Flowers can be make excellent still lifes as well as macros. The presentaion in question, to me, is more macro than still life.
