I realize that for challenges it is necessary to get rid of the EXIF data to hide image details, but it sure would be nice if you could save the data so it could be associated with the image rather than me having to retype it in every time I uplaod an image.
EXIF data is preserved in the original image only if the image is unmodified.
When you resize and save the image, all that exif data is modified, mostly lost,
and is not easily restored. That is why it is important to preserve an unmodified
original of the image for verification of the camera parameters and the original
image content.

Most of the EXIF data that we care about (camera, exposure details) can be preserved. Unfortunately, the method of choice to optimize quality for DPC (Save for Web in Adobe Products) strips it all out (GRRRR, how about a damn checkbox??). You can reapply the EXIF data, but that is as much hassle as retyping it, IMO.

For Canon, Breezebrowser does a decent job of reapplying EXIF to a batch of images - as long as the filename (not extension) match
As an aside, users of Adobe Photoshop have another path. You can open the image in ImageReady, and "Save Optimized". There are options in ImageReady to let you write the EXIF data with the file; why this functionality is absent in Photoshop is beyond me.

I'm not saying that I need someone to reconstruct my EXIF data. I preserve my originals, so I have the data.
What I mean is that I want the site to read it out of my file (if it is in there) when I upload an image, so I don't have to open another application to read the image date, aperature, shutter speed and ISO in order to fill it in on the form.

I too would love for this not to be stripped off on upload to DPC. It would be absolutely great to have the exposure information all filled in for me when I hit the "upload" button. Not to mention the exposure date!
First step, of course, is to make sure the info is not stripped off upon saving, as it is with Photoshop "save for web". Thus my post regarding the additional options available in ImageReady.
I will be using ImageReady from now on to save my DPC submissions, and all other images that I am saving to post to the web.

It isn't stripped as far as i know. I participate in annother site and their requirements are that the EXIF info be IN the file (BTW, PS 7 keeps the info in a JPG save if you just save it. Have no idea bout 'save for the web' as i don't use that). They read it from the file and display it during and after voting, no problem.
Not all programs strip exif data (I use PSP8 and the Save for Web feature includes exif), and not all save options do. I, too, agree that it would be great if the site pre-populated my exif data upon upload if it is embedded in the photo. If it is not embedded the fields just continue to be blank and the user has to enter them manually.
