I won a photo contest at a local park. It's a park I do a LOT of photography at and is called "Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park." It has lovely ponds and rolling hills and has all these mostly modern sculptures around the grounds.

Winning Shot "Stay Awhile"

We had to have a sculpture in our photo, but the photo didn't have to be focused on the sculpture. My goal with this one was to capture the setting.

This is the 4th year for the contest. I've entered 3 out of the 4 years (I was on a trip out west the year I didn't enter) and have come in first all 3 times. What I like about this contest is that it's open to amateurs as well as pros and is judged - not a popular vote type thing. Since I kind of straddle the fence between amateur and pro status I've starting staying away from any contests that state for amateurs only. I do NOT plan to enter next year. I hope this doesn't come across badly...but I want to give someone else a chance. Not to sound like I'm better...because some of the photos I felt were excellent....but kind of like around here - some people just hit upon the formula that works. Since this contest pays cash prizes, I think it might be fair to bow out now. I would maybe like to be a judge if they'll let me :)

Anyway, I was excited and very surprised to win this year and plan to use the money to buy my hubby's birthday gift this week! Also going to renew my membership here, which just expired. I just need to get to the bank to make the deposit.

Well, congrats on the series of wins! And that's a lovely photo.

I think offering to judge is a really nice way to give back to the park.

Great photo and congrats on the win. I don't think you should stop entering though. It's a CASH prize....screw the others it they can't do better. If you don't need the cash donate it to a charity, a high school photography class, or something.

I just think it would be bad for the contest, and therefore bad for the park, if I enter and keep winning. I don't know anyone personally at the park - no "insider" stuff going on. Yet, if I was one of the other entrants, I would certainly lose interest in entering if the same person kept winning. If I start to feel bad for winning, that's not a good thing.

On the other side, if I kept entering and DIDN'T win, I would always wonder if it's because my photos were not judged the best or if it's because contest organizers wanted "new blood" for the winners. I just think it's time.

I knew winning would be good for something....just able to renew my membership. Good timing for me :) Wow...just realized it'll be five years in December.
