There seems to periodically be discussion on people "complaining" (ok, not the right word at all, but can't think of an alternative off hand) that they entered competitions here too soon, not really understanding what the voting crowd at DPC likes/dislikes.
I certainly feel I entered stuff too soon, although in my case it was more a case of entering sh*t photos, rather the DPC voters, in my new found enthusiasm to enter something .... anything!
I recently graphed my results here, as I love playing with numbers. I'd never really looked in depth at my results before collectively.
When you look at the graph it is quite staggering. It is as if I was drowning and really missing the point here, then one day BANG! Some sort of realisation dawned on me (no idea what it was, but it probably involved caffeine and chocolate). My position (am looking at that rather than score) jumped big time, but importantly it stayed far higher than before, remaining in the top half ever since.
Anyway, just thought I'd shae as I think the jump there is quite amazing. I wonder how many people here would see a very similar pattern.
That's certainly an impressive learning curve, Natator! I'm happy that your results have stayed so consistently high (and show no signs of dropping!) Me, I have yet to submit a photgraph for a challege, but once I've contributed to ten or so, I'll see if I have a similar pattern to yours (or not). Maybe the next challenge will be a good start.
my goes up and down like the sun. :-) (and almost as frequently). It is nothing for me to have a 4.x score between a couple of high fives, or even a 6 every now and then.
I dont think people are entering photo's too soon, because DPC is a learning tool for a lot of people (including me). Along with the great tutorials, and comments for challenge submissions, I feel I'm learning a lot about taking good photos.
I can't speak for everyone, but I like to see bad photo's when I'm voting as well as good ones! Only way to learn.
Also, in the short time I have been a member and a user, I have learned much more from other people's photos and casting however many hudred of votes, rather than the comments on my own.

Well put. DPC has been a massive learning curve for me. I used to just take snaps of everything. Now I take more deliberate shots for comps, and have found my general pic taking just for fun has improved amazingly as I take more care with them, especially with composition.
Oh Kirbic ..... may not be a definite trend there ... but you sure know how to do more interesting backgrounds to your graph than I do!
I have only submitted pic's to 2 challenges so far but will put details into graph form to see how i have improved (i hope) when i have entered a few more.

I had to laugh just then as some new clown who doesn't like negative comments on his entries (it's the only one I can remember leaving for months, as it simply amazed me) came back with "I haven`t commented on your "graph.jpg" picture have i?"
Damn, wish I'd realised the graph counted as a picture (maybe use the camera and taking a photo of the sceen would make it one, I would have
definitely entered it for the March Free Study *laugh*
Mind you, I'd be pressed to get a ribbon, there are more exciting graphs here ;)
