After spending the last few days reading the threads as they cycled through the recent postings on my home page, I've started to wonder if people in religious and political forums spend as much time debating photography as we do on their topics?
So there I said it.
Let the grand discussions rage on.
Its variety that makes life so interesting, aside from providing a living for psychologists and sociologists and....
I was actually a list admin on one automotive site that prohibited discussions on guns, religion, & politics.
It was much quieter and stayed on topic.
There are photo sites like that too.
I find them generally not as interesting as DPC, but for those at risk of bursting a blood vessel over a disagreement on the internet, such sites might be a safer alternative.

My blood vessels are safe, relatively speaking, just laughing and wondering how some manage to find time to entry the challenges. :)

I don't see it as a bad thing. The more one debates with others, the better they begin to understand not only those people with whom they are debating, but themselves.
I would argue that one of the reasons there is such a thing as a close knit internet community stems from these healthy discussions.

This topic highlights a great thing about DPC; that each member has control over what topics they see. Those who want the full community experience can go on seeing every forum topic that pops up. If you want a pure photography experience you can change your preferences so that only photography related topics show up. If you want everything but Rants, just uncheck Rants. The options are up to each user and I appreciate that we are treated like adults in this respect.
As for non-photography topics, I believe they're important. The fuel of artistry is life experience and for some people that can take the form of sharing stories or even debating controversial topics. Also, the non-photography topics keep some of us involved with this community during the times in our lives that creating photos for challenges is not practical for one reason or another. So, I'm grateful to DPC for creating such an inclusive community that gives us such a wide degree of individual control.
