It's quite obvious that if you are a paying member, you are pretty serious into photography. If you werent that serious about it, you wouldnt pay to join. So that being said, perhaps all Member challenges, you should have to vote AND comment. I am sure that most people wonder what they did wrong to recieve a 1, myself included. I wouldnt vote a 1 unless the picture was horrid, completely out of focus, etc. A lot of us are trying to learn, and I know that I take all comments to heart, no matter how simplistic they are. So this is my suggestion. Perhaps I can get people to back me up on this one.

If I give a four five or six it means it is IMHO a so-so picture, unless one aspect is great and another is horrible what comment can you make? " this is an average photograph ?"
On the other hand given the number of very nice shots that some Bozo has scored as a 1 , perhaps a comment should be required to give very high or low scores.
People wouldnt have time to vote then, Or you would get a lot of 3, 4, 5, 6.. etc.. comments or nice, pretty, cool or something ... doesnt sound too good to force people to comment

Apart from the fact that, IMHO, 1 should not be allowed as vote and, in fact, with all due respect and love for DPC, I did choose a completely different way in such regard, I think it would be nice for people to understand that when it comes to Art (and Photography is an Art), not necessarily there is something wrong that has been done.
The voter, in fact, may well select purely on his/her own taste and "De Gustibus Non Disputandum Est" (ie: it does not make a lot of sense to discuss about taste..).
Comments and criticism are proper during an exercise not at competition time. At the very least, because you should respect your antagonists.

Yes, I agree, comments should be mandatory if one scores a picture a "1" If I remember right, that's the rule they have in photosig, that you really have to explain yourself why you voted a picture thumbs down. However, when you have this rule, people might just vote a picture with a "2" so they don't have to explain themselves.
So if I voted all of your photographs a 1 from now until whenever, you wouldnt be the bit slightly curious as to why? I'm not saying I would... My point is how am I supposed to "learn" if you dont leave comments. Obviously if someone is voting a 1, then they hate it. I want to know why they hate it. I like for my photographs to cater to Everyone, not just some. I enjoy criticism VERY much, because photography is everything to me, and any way to help me improve I welcome with open arms.

It's just common courtesy *in my eyes* if you are going to give something such a low mark, you should include comments as to why it recieved such a mark. The same could be said about teachers. If your teacher always gave you an F, but didnt mark the paper with comments and corrections, how would you have learned?
Stuff like this has been brought up time and time again, and honestly, without coming accross as "troll", I'm sick of hearing it. It would never work and I think we just give it a rest.

Actually, I think that is a very helpful comment. It is a very concise yet very descriptive of the impression you left on the viewer.
It could be that votes AND comments were required up to %20, then it would no longer be forced.
But I think what movieman is trying to prove is that with commenting forced, people get more careless. But would that change?
I think the main reason people don't want to be forced to comment with a low mark is that to do so would be to give up their anonymity. Why should someone have to justify their judgements to you? The fact that one, or many, voters scored an image low should be educational to the photog- they should learn that image has it's detractors. The voting here is on a scale of 1 thru 10. Ten is the best and there is one, or more, best image in every challenge. For each voter there will be an image that they think is the worst in the challenge. I think almost every entry gets some low marks, certainly some lower than the photographer thinks it deserves. That's because we don't all have the same tastes and knowledge base regarding digital photography techniques. Would be oh so boring if we all liked the same images.
