I need some unique ideas for a dance class photo.
I would like to try something different than the norm...
Does anyone have any ideas?

Thats a great idea but might I suggest a pair of drywall stilts (outlawed in Canada). These allow you to walk freely around about 3ft+ taller then you usually are and you won't need to keep moving a chair.

If working with children get at their eye level instead of above (usual place adults view from), if adults, view low or high instead of where you normally see them from.
Use wide angle and get close so the viewer is there with the dancer instead of telephoto and removed.
Depending of how many dancers there are, you could ask the instructor to make them perform a dance where everyone is facing towards the camera. But let them be in the motion. Use the lights present. Forget your flash back home. I have made some photographs of young dancers using the technique. I could mail you one, just so you could see the idea.

Dance is what we do for a living ;o IF we could offer any advice it would be
a: don't stand up and shoot, the angle is all wrong. stay low
b: don't use short lenses, interfering in a class for a photo is cardinal sin no 1 in our book.
c: don't use flash
d: any setup photography in dance is a no no (for us) let them do their thing and see what you can get

How about trying to capture the motion blur of the feet as the dancers go through their paces.
LOL. Sorry, I just have to ask. Why, oh why, are drywall stilts outlawed in Canada?
To many people from the east coast (newfie's mostly) drunk on the job, put on stilts and fall over hurting themselves. Stupid rule but the same goes for stun guns as I have justr found out. Shocking isn't it.
