Am I the only one, who takes time out to LOOK at 'other peoples favorites', when visiting their portfolios.
I really do, as I sometime see images that I have never seen before, and often make them my favorites as well.
Why do people add favorites to there list of favorites?
1 - I add favorites because the chosen image really 'POPS', when I first see it.
2 - The chosen image appeals to me for it beauty.
3 - I learn something new technically, or just really like the set up and composition.
4 - I like the person who has taken the photo, and want to have some of my favorite images of theres in my favorites.
5 - I just like looking at them.
6 - Because they have won a ribbon, and I like to have some of my favorite ribbon winner images in my favorites.
7 - I just like it and don't know why.
8 - Because they like my photos, and also take an interest in me as a friend
9 - Other peoples' favorites is a good place to look for really good shots.
10 - I also want to easily be able to find the photo for future reference, and this is the best place to find one of my favorite images in my saved Picture Library.
For me it would be the following that is not striked through.

I look at other photog's favorites to see what they find appealing and/or interesting, especially the favorites of photogs that I think are good. I like to try to get a little bit more inside their heads and see what they are thinking photographically (if that makes sense).
I choose favorites for one of three reasons:
1. I like the photo
2. I want to easily be able to find the photo for future reference, usually because I want to explore that facet of photography further someday.
3. Sometimes, a photo is so damn funny I want to take a look at from time to time.
This brings up the opportunity to share some of my favorite funny photos by others with you:

- - - HEY!!! There's one missing.?.?. The one where the guy is standing in the bathroom and somehow he has bent over far enough to stick his head up his @@@. It's not in my favorites anymore. I wonder if anyone remembers this photo and knows what happened to it.

any favorites. I think I've got one of yours in mine.
I pick favorites when they "speak" to me.
I look at other peoples favorites to see if any of my images are there. ;)
ETA - I quite often find rockin' images I have never and would probably never run across any other way in other peoples faves. And seeing what others gravitate towards is cool as well.

And yes, I do look at other people's favorites and frequently find new favorites of my own. :-)
It used to be just because a photo is great, but there are too many of those. So now I favorite a picture because it's something I've never seen before and/or some technique that I want to steal remember.

Bingo. Or something that moves me emotionally: happy, sad, angry, scared, etc.
I really need to go clean out my faves, actually.
But to the OP, yes, I do sometimes poke around others' faves to find gems I'd missed.
I thought everyone looked at other people's favorites. I know I do. What brings me to the other people?
1. People who have commented on my photos, good and bad.
2. People who have recently uploaded photos that I like.
3. People who have made comments in a forum thread that I find interesting, or uninteresting.
I am sure there are more, but I can't think of the general classifications of people... besides, isn't that bigotry? hum... well... for another day. :-)
I have often chosen pictures as favorites that I find in other peoples' favorites. I suspect that a photo that pops for someone else will likely pop for me as well. They don't all, but other peoples' favorites is a good place to look for really good shots.

Yeah, that. And to see what commenters have liked from other people, when I don't understand a comment or really dig one made on one of my shots.
