I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a way to get a Canon EOS-400D Rebel XTi to do like a 30 minute or 1 hour long exposure. The longest shutter speed that I can get is 30 seconds. Is there a way to manually set it longer?
bulb setting (B), where the shutter is open as long as the shutter button is pressed (directly or via remote cable). i think the camera must be in manual mode, not shutter or aperture priority. try putting in manual mode, then adjusting shutter speed longer than 30 secs.

Buy a remote. I would suggest a wireless. Because my wired remote is terrible...and sitting right next (within a few feet) of my camera is a pain in the butt.
Then you just hold the button down for as long as you, or your batteries, hold out.

I had to drive an hour to buy mine..because I live in the middle of arkansas..where there are NO photography stores.

just a couple of thoughts. there is a canon-produced extension for the wired remote. terribly expensive, so I made my own. cut the small wired remote, then simply added a couple of connectors so I could make it as long as I want. Also, the canon remote has a feature to lock the exposure button and you can walk away, go inside and get warm, then come back to unlock 30 minutes later.
I bought one of these for my camera....has been perfect for almost a year now...no problems at all. You can also lock the switch so you don't have to sit holding the button down. Best part was that it cost under $5.00!!!!!! Alot cheaper than the ones from Ritz/Wolf Camera.

This is no more than a simple switch which can also be locked in the on position. This allowed me to open the shutter, lock it and do something else whilst the picture was taken. When in bulb mode the display shows elapsed time so you don't need a separate timer.

Hmmmm that's not a bad idea, I'll look into doing a self portrait. I haven't done one of those yet. Have you seen some cool long exposure self portraits that seems kinda strange....ohhh you were referring to me saying look for me in the next challenge haha I get it, I guess I should say, look for my photo in the next long exposure challenge :)
