Originality is really a plus for me. There are a lot of shots that don't stand out because the topic, concept or technique has been done so many times before.
this comes up quite a bit, and though I might understand the essence or basis of a generalized comment like this, it seems to me that "originality" is subjective and depends on life experience.

You are right there, light is the main and most important factor. But contrast is very important in the processing stage. I always pump up the contrast for photos I post online. Every photo!

Absolutely agree on contrast. Having just finished wading thru the "orange" challenge, there were so many that could have used a contrast boost to great effect, as well as a bit of sharpening applied after resizing. Of course there were others where saturation was so high as to blow out the red channel over much of the image.
