I think you guys are saying the same thing, but just to clarify there are two similar sounding tools being talked about here: "select color range" and "selective color". Select color range is NOT legal in basic as it makes a selection (which is its purpose), Selective Color IS legal when applied to the whole image.
I use a selective color layer specifically to boost the blacks in basic challenge entries all the time.
As a side note, it might be helpful to move this thread out of Member Discussion so that the peons can benefit as well. Those poor bastards can only enter basic editing challenges, after all.
