I have been always in awe of black and white film photographs but never quite was able to replicate the same look and feel to digital ones. The single most distinguishing factor has been the grit or noise. The film noise is so much more appealing to the eye than the ones in digital. I would love to hear from the experts here. I have used the Alienskin exposure 2 a number of times but I am still struggling to reach here.
Are you using Windoze? Grab the Virtual Photographer plug-in choose a Black and White effect you like then Grain to your taste by changing the Film Speed to 400, 800 or 1600 ASA.
There are some stand-alone products, but if you use Photoshop, the "Add Noise" filter can do a very good job. You have a range of choices, and if you add the noise on a separate (duplicate) image layer you can easily control it via blend modes and opacity.
