I have a new D70 but the lens that I am using is not ideal for my kind of pictures.
Anyone who can suggest to me a good portrait lens that I can fit in to my new D70? A good telephoto lens? An all-round lens (if there is any?).
I have read from many reviews of lenses but I would appreciate it very much if I get "first-hand" suggestions from you people (as I feel I know you through your pictures). This is my first time to have a bigger camera so I am quite naive about its technicalities and any suggestion from you will be greatly appreciated.

I'm not convinced I want you to have a better weapon, since i can see what you've done with your Coolpix.
Lots of pros use a 50mm prime for portraits (which is clearly your strength :)) when shooting digital it seems. Dollar for dollar you're getting the best quality lens at reasonable cost. For practicality, a 24-70mm (or similar) lens gives you a little more flexibility, and there are lots of options out there for manufacturers...but yours came with something like that didn't it?
My Hypnotic Stare was taken with D70 with a Af-s Nikor 24-85 lens. My only problem is that last weekend when I shoot outdoors, the DOF was only 4.5 - 26 f stop. So I really don't get a very shallow DOF.

the Canon 50mm prime goes down to 1.4...that will get you about as shallow as it gets :)
Congrats on your new camera. I have spent a great deal of time researchin lenses for this camera and have received sound advice from several Nikkor users here.
1st....did you have any nikon compatible lenses before your D70 acquisition?
If not, then, is the 24-85 the only lense you have now?
If it is, then these are some ideas.
1. 50mm 1.8 (under 100.00)
2. wider wide angle. (14mm or 17-35)
3. 80-400 VR zoom.
This will be a complete package and compliment your current 24-85.
You could take the next 2-3 years acquiring each lense (holidays etc), but start with the single focal 50mm 1.8.

Thanks for the suggestions. 50 mm seems to be a popular suggestion for portrait shot. Maybe I'll go for it. I am just hinking out loud. Also updating this thread to get more comments.
