Today, after recently going live with my website for selling prints, I received an email from someone looking for a local photographer to take pictures of her jewelry for her website.

I'd like to promptly respond but I'd first like to be prepared to provide her with my pricing. My website is for print sales and doesn't mention product photography, but I'll take the work. I have no doubt that I can provide the photographic services that she is requesting.

Can you please give me some ideas as to what to charge, what others typically charge, whether to charge by the entire job or by the piece, and/or provide some examples that I can use to tailor a pricing structure before I reply to her request?

Charge by the hour. Quote an hourly rate to start with. Build into that travel, location, and any extras you need.
When you find out how many pieces are involved, then you can quote a price for the whole job.

Thanks. Bump for anyone else who has anything else to suggest. Maybe someone has an idea what price photogs typically charge per hour for something like this.

Lately I've been doing a LOT of gift basket photos for a local lady for her website. I charge an hourly rate for the photos and processing and then also charge her for the web-ready photo. I've now done about 150 photos in the past 2 months. It has been quite profitable and she pays very promptly. Work out what you think is fair to YOU for the hourly rate. Think of what is involved. With what I was doing, she'd pretty much just bring boxes of products and I'd go through a list of the basket contents she had written down and pull out each product for the baskets as required, shoot them, put them back and do the next. It is quite time consuming but we agreed on a price before we started and I include all the time organising the baskets and photographing/editing in my hourly rate. She then pays $5(Aus) per web sized photo. She gets nothing else.
