If I were an artist I think I would have declined the offer but would have asked to do it to a copy instead. Don't artists have a certain code of ethics that include not desecrating an other artists work?

Defacing a 400 year old painting like that is pretty appalling, IMO. I suppose it will make a nice paying job for someone to restore it at a future date.

Being able to afford to do such a thing must be a status symbol for the owner.
