I just noticed that challenge results now tell you what the average vote for challenge participants and non-participants is now. That may have been around a while, but I just noticed it. I think this is great for answering the age old question of whether or not you should be allowed to vote in a challenge you entered. I have yet to see one that the particpants voted higher than the non-particpiants (edit to add, I just found the first one where the averages were inverted), though most differences are close, some have been as high as a half a point.
I think I saw two in my entries where the participants score my entry higher and was marginal. (Like 0.1 or 0.2). In many cases the non-participants voted about 0.4 - 0.6 higher.
I just looked at the top 11 finishers in Every Picture Tells A Story and each one except for the blue ribbon winner had a significant difference between the participants and non-participants averages. That is the non-participants scored their photos significantly higher (around .2-.5 points higher) than the participants in the challenge. The blue ribbon winner had a very negligble difference of .04. It would be interesting to know how many total votes make up each of those averages.

It would be interesting, but I suspect would also lead to witch-hunts and village burning! It might be quite good if each individual had their split visible, but only to themselves; that way those who subconsciously vote lower would have it drawn to their attention.

LOL. Yeah that would be interesting. I'm guessing I might have a higher non-participant average. I know when I have brainstormed for challenges in the past whatever ideas I've discard as being too cliche and thus shoot something else, I am more critical of during the voting period if I see them entered. Usually those shots have to be extremely well done to get over the hump of my bias to get a great score.
What I would like to know is how many votes is the non-participant average based on. Is it more like the non-camera vote where the average is only based on a few votes? If not then the non-participant average would probably hold more meaning to me then even my final score.

I am not a rocket scientist but I would conclude that the number non-participant voting average is based on the amount of people that voted for the picture that didn't have a photo in the challenge. That could be as little as 0 (if everyone that voted had an image in the challenge) or as high as as many votes as you received (if everyone that voted didn't have an image in the challenge).

I did a quick survey of a couple of my entries and found its about even - in the free studies and large challenges you'll have more paticipant voters than not - but mostly it's the other way around.
