I'm completely shocked that this photo did so well in the free study. I had all but given up submitting baby shots to free studies, but I didn't have anything else that I really liked for April and I don't want to miss a month's free study this year....
I honestly though this wouldn't get a 6....
For those of you who asked about specifics, here is the lighting setup:
I used a single strobe flash with a homemade softbox. My softbox was a cardboard box with a whole cut in the bottom so that it fit over my strobe. I lined the inside of the cardboard box with aluminum foil and I covered the opening with about 6 or 7 layers of thin white plastic material. Actually I used a disposable white table cloth for the diffusion material.....
The flash was moved in really close to William (as close as I could get the box without it being in the frame) just above and to the left of my camera.
Processing was very basic..slight curves adjustment, selective sharpening, and Photoshop's black and white conversion command, resize, save for web. Here it is straight from the camera:
