I use it when my background is brighter than the foreground, as not to underexpose my subject and not overexpose the background. Sunset portraits are when I use it the most.
Even when I'm not "filling in shadows", I'll sometimes use it just so that I get a catch light into my subject's eyes. When I do this, I usually have the flas exposure turned down to -2 or -3. All I want is a tiny bit of light getting into their eyes.
Its used as fill to brighten the subject when the background is brighter. You would
normally have an underexposed subject in my photos and have to try and recover them
in photoshop. These were taken with the 580EXII and the Fongsphere on it.
Thanks, this helps. I have also noticed that when using a flash during these types of situations, its seems best to have the flash off camera, such as on a bracket, so that shadows are less obvious.

Definitely. Flash is ALWAYS better off camera, not just for fill.
