I saw where someone had built one using opaque white plexiglass and taped the sides to make a cube. This was pretty expensive. So something I did that you might consider in lieu of the cardboard box: Get a cheap Sterlite or Rubbermaid container. These are typically clear white-ish plastic. I laid it on its side, cut backgrounds that would fit (along the same curve of the cardboard box) and then you can shine your lights right through the white plastic. Diffusion was a little less, so I bought a big sheet of white fabric (rip stop canvas) that I could drape over the whole thing to help diffuse.
Cool thing about this, is that when you're done, you can put your lights, backdrops, sheet and whatever into the box, put the lid on, and store it. Plus it's more sturdy.
