Hey guys,
I've been pretty active since I joined the site a few weeks ago but I still haven't asked a question that has been itching in the back of my mind for a couple months. I have been looking to break into the wedding photography business but I really don't know the best way to go about it. I don't have any sort of shots that could qualify as "wedding shots." What should I do because I know if I apply at a studio they'll want shots that can demonstrate my abilities. Only problem is I don't have much experience in studio/wedding photography and am not sure how to get it if i can't get hired... a bit of a conundrum! :( I do have experience doing high level photography, I do a lot of the sports photography here at St. Olaf along with another student photographer and our shots are routinely displayed on our website and newspaper and whatnot. I have CS3 & Lightroom experience... how can I get the experience necessary for wedding photography?

P.S. sorry for the long post, if you don't wanna read it, the jist is, how do I get into wedding photography?

You can always set up some wedding shots with people you know, dress them up in wedding gear and photographs them in a suitable setting. It's just a thought.

I would look/post on craig's list and offer to shoot for free in exchange for model releases so you can use the shots for a portfolio. Then once you have a bit of a portfolio you should be able to get in touch with folks needing a fotog.

Another idea is to track down an established photographer and try to convince him/her to let you work as second shooter with them. You get to start building your portfolio, and will learn loads too - all in a relatively risk free environment.

Join and attend your local pro organization. Meet people, make connections. Offer to assist or second shoot -for free for the first couple of weddings if need be.
If some stranger calls me I'd not pay much attention. If I get a call from a member of my local org I'll talk and offer advice, etc. That's why there are local orgs!

I'm shooting a sports team on saturday and needed help - I turn to the members of my org instead of all the 'amateurs' out there - that are probably perfectly capable of doing the job, but it's why there is such an organization - to help eachother out, learn, etc.
