Just went for a late night drive and got some great foggy/night shots but the noise is just nutts. |Can't post the image right now but tried various ISOs and Long Exposure NR and the shots are still crap. Obviously I'm missing something as the D200 is supposed to be quite "un-noisy". Any simple tips would be helpful please.

Post the pictures unedited then it's alot easier to give tips.

To be honest IVO I found my old D200 to be quite noisey especially in RAW at night or longer exposures with a high ISO. I ended up with trading it for a Fuji S5 Pro that was a lot better.

I'll agree with MAK
my D200 was very bad at anything above 400 ..
(which is why i bought the D3 )

Thanks for the replies. As the picture was shot in RAW, resizing it for this site makes it difficult to see the true extent of the noise. That said, and realizing I'm not alone with this problem, I think I'll just tinker with various settings while wearing different hats. Thanks!

I too won't shoot with the D200 above 1600. And that is only due to shooting in a gym. Outside I will shoot at 800 during the day and have had great results but at night everything is so noisy I won't use them. As with Ralph, I'm going to go with the D3. Soon I hope.

I also don`t go over iso800. At night i always use a tripod and between 100-200 iso for great results.

As you were using long exposure NR you must have been using a tripod so if you stick below iso 200 you shouldn`t really have noise problems.
