I did a photoshoot last night and got some great pics (to post later) BUT, the one that was her abosolute favorite has had something happen to the file (the bright pink line through the middle) and I dont know what to do now

I have done no editing, the original is a RAW file and look like this too... but when I originally shot this the line wasn't there (I shot teathered so I saw it right away), so something must have happened in the interm to make this happen.
I'm at work right now but I'm going to be trying to work on it tonight when I get home. if you could suggest some steps and pointers I'll have a go tonight and see how I make out (always like to try myself first). but thte fact that you seem to think it's fixable is very encouraging. the part I'm most owrried about if her face the rest really shouldn't be that hard I would think...
Shouldnt be hard at all.... I "fixed" the small version in a few minutes.... simple, careful cloning...
you can also select the unaffected side the neck and side of her jaw.... copy it onto a new layer, flip the selection horizontal.... move into place.... "transform" as necessary to fit, adjust brightness, etc .... apply layer mask and paint out what you don't need....
I have a trained monkey that could fix that ! No need to worry...you'll get tons of help if you can't do it yourself....
...The bigger issue would be "what is that line"? You may not be so lucky next time...what if this was a closeup portrait or something that couldn't be cloned out?
Thanks for the advise and steps... This will definatly be a good change to work on those PS skills (whick it seems I never have time to do until theres an emergency)

No kidding! Have you checked the Nikon site to see if this has happened to anyone else?
not yet... this was the last photo I took last night. I want to test it out some more first, see if I can reproduce the problem and pinpoint the probable cause myself first.
My initial suspicion as I think about it is that I may have done something while that picture was loading that caused the laptop to lose that bit of information when saving... but I do want to make sure to see if it was just a blip first... Cameras still under an extended warrante so I'm not overly worried... and I was planning on getting a d300 in very short order regardless...
I am not familiar with Nikon, but, when you shoot tethered, do you not ALSO have a card in the camera? When I shoot tethered, I have a card in the camera and it not only sends the file to the laptop, it ALSO writes the file to the card. I always have my card as a backup.

nope... when I work in my studio I generally do not put a card in... in fact I'm not even sure if I can have it sent to the computer and left on a card as well... I'll look that up... but like I said I've never had a reason to either cause I'v never had a problem and never even though it could happen... majore lesson learned.
Were you by chance using a Sandisk Ultra II 2.0 GB memory card? If so, try opening the file with Irfanview (free) and see if you can extract a JPG without the line.
That card in the D200 can do funky things sometimes when it's becoming corrupted and if you also shoot, delete, and shoot again real quick in RAW uncompressed format.

I actually shoot tethered with no card present at all so it must have happened sometime during the transfer from camera to computer... but it hasn't happened since

The Pink Line effect simply means the next payment is due on your equipment. :)
Sometimes a cell phone can cause all kinds of glitches in electronic gear. Try holding one near a radio and you can hear the radio noise. I hope that the problem is a one time thing.
