Re the results so far: It's visually very exciting. Lots to see. I like the different colors and how the colors work in relation to those of the original portrait.
I feel that the composition (having the face looking off frame) and the absence of anything else leaves a picture that feels like it's missing a bit of context. For me, I am always drawn to pictures that have a feeling of incompletion, so that's part of what really appeals to me. However for many others, it might need a place to be. It looks like something that would go very well on the cover of an interesting novel. Even a quality matte/frame would be enough.
I'm not sure exactly what the question is though. Are you looking for opinions on the brushes themselves that you have created or the results?
As to the lack of detail in the face, I think you are right that it needs a tiny bit more detail, but I'd not worry too much about it, from the style of the rest of the pic, with the drastic and powerful 'brush' work, it does work very nicely to have a little bit left for the mind's eye to fill in.
