OK, this is a simple question that I just can't seem to figure out the answer for tonight, so any smarty pants out there, please help me out. I have an image that is 3072x2048 pixels uncropped. I don't want to crop it. I want to print an 8x10. So what I want to do is make another blank canvas in PS in a larger size and center this image on it to make it into an 8x10. What size will that canvas need to be?

I use the crop tool and set it to be at 8 x 10

then drag over the image extending it past the size of the image, so that it fits all the image

i have the background as black default too

If you want to keep the original/master file pristene then you are correct not to crop it. In PS go to Image/Duplicate to make a copy of the image then you can close the original with out effecting it. As it is your 3072 x 2048 image will print at 10.24 x 6.267 inches (at 300 ppi) so you will want to reduce the size a bit to get the long side shorter than or equal to 10 inches. To do that go to Image/Image Size (sorry if the menu selectio wording isn't correct, I'm working from memory) and resize the image appropriately. Make sure to select Bicubic Sharper to down size the image. Next you want to resize the canvas to the 8 x 10 inch size you want your print to be. Go to Image/Resize Canvas and make the short side 8 inches and the long side 10 inches. Make sure the "absolut" (not relative) option is selected. This will give you your image at 8 x 10 and centered. Hope that helps.
