Hey!

Anyone know of a good web site that offers tips on how to make different types of filters? (The Cokin type). I have to make three filters as a project for photo class...

Or if anyone has made their own, any tips would be appreciated.

DIY Infrared Filter

I have also read that you can use the glass from a welders mask to make a ND filter.

Funnily enough, I tried that just last week.

I bought two pieces of welding glass, and took them to a glass dealer/cutter place.

Sadly, they couldn't manage to cut it, it was too tough. I encouraged him to get rough with it (that's why I bought a second one), but he ended up breaking it into about 6 pieces.

My hubby will try this weekend with a "diamond cutting wheel" - don't ask me any details, though.

Cross fingers for me, please.

Exciting update !!!!

I bought a piece of welder’s glass (strength 10) to put into my Cokin filter holder. It cost me less than $5.00!
The local glass cutting place couldn’t manage to cut it, but my clever hubby did it (with a diamond cutting wheel and arbor mounted on a drill press).

Here are the results - the first one is straight from camera, the second one after RAW conversion and some minor tweaking, the third one a quick B+W version.

It was a very overcast day. I focused manually, then put on the filter.
Aperture f/16 and 45 second exposure.
Don't ask about the ISO....... I thought I had changed it to 100 :-(

Here is the exciting part: there was a car that drove along the road during this exposure and I can’t see even see a trace of it – exactly what I had hoped for !!!!!!!

I'm tickled pink with the results, especially considering how little money it cost me :-)

Thanks ever so much for the information Beetle, You must have been thinking of me when you devised this, knowing how upset I get when cars and people suddenly pop up when I am trying to take a photo.

I will definitely be calling you for the particulars on how to cut the welding glass.
