Why is everyone here so fixed on Ken Rockwell here! Rockwell said this, Rockwell suggested this, Rockwell is so great! Rockwell said that I'll get better pictures with my pinhole camera than my Nikon, so if he is so great and righteous, should I just give up all my camera gear and get a pinhole camera. People are shocked and fear, when I say Rockwell is wrong! Maybe because they did follow Rockwell's advice do not want to admit their wrong decisions. If Rockwell told you to jump off a bridge, would you do it?!
I have followed this Rockwell's advice many times when I first got into photography, I have wasted too much money and time with him and his BS. I have learned my lesson, thanks Rockwell you have tot me well, and I will follow your lessons and tips and pass the word around get people to stay away from you.
Rockwell tells people that he is right because he doesn't give any marketing BS with expensive equipment and tells how/ and what you REALLY need for to take great pictures (Yeah, like a pinhole camera). But, he just tells you that you're an idiot because you got a Nikon D300 of a D40, that you have wasted your money because you got a Nikon SB-800 over a Sb-600. Yeah, sure Rockwell, any dumb fool can pick up a camera and get great photos with a D40. But you forget that maybe some people have special need/purposes for their camera and equipment. That a D40 would simply be inadequate for the job and a SB-600 just doesn't have enough GN output! And who the heck takes portraits with a 400mm lens?!?!
Every experience photographer has his needs and wants, and sometimes isn't sure of what he/she needs. I look up reviews on the internet, especially other users opinions. But mostly try the piece of equipment out for myself. As it is more important to find flaws or gems out there.
Maybe everyone is fixed on Rockwell's reviews and opinions because they haven't read anything from Luminous Landscape or Thom Hogan or even Photozone!! !!

As far as I know *most* people on this site who know who KR is think he's a borderline idiot... Where are all these "I asked for advice from this site earlier, but all I got is Rockwell this, Rockwell that..." comments anyway?
Ken's worth reading if only to point out things you might want to consider while reading other more well thought out reviews. See it for whatever it's worth. Unless you're a fool his remarks in no way will hurt you.
Bjorn Rorslett and Thom Hogan are far smarter and better Nikon reviewers fwiw.
Ben-I thought you got some decent advice for an "apples and oranges" question and one that people can't possibly answer for you. A Wide Angle Zoom is far different animal from a midrange so like Nick said...depends on what you want to shoot.
