My thoughts and I am certain the thoughts of us all are with the victims and releatives of the terrible tragidy in Madrid this morning.
We must never give in to the cowards that carry out these senseless acts against mankind.
my god. i didn't know what you were talking about until i went to the cbc website. terrorism and mass murder doesn't exactly win you favour in any negotiation for recognition as a separate nationstate.
Nobody has claimed responsibility yet, but everyone seems to be blaming E.T.A, but they say they did not carry this out. So no leads as yet as to who is responsible. So very sad.
I lived in Madrid, Spain for many years, and I traveled the subway system almost every day. It was clean and very modern for 20 years ago. There were many attacks against Americans and the Spanish people when I was living there, including bombs planted in a well known eating establishment that Americans were known to frequent. I never forgot riding the military transport bus that picked us up in base housing which was 15 miles from the military base and took us to the base and back to run errands, grocery shop, Etc. One day as I was leaving the base to return to the housing area I was looking out the window and I saw this older man on the side of the road, and he gave us a terrible look and he mimicked holding a rifle and started pretending to shoot at us....he had a wild look on his face, and he laughed as he pretended to gun us down. I've never forgotten that face or that memory. I was so sorry to see this happen in Madrid...the people of Spain are for the most part very nice, and the city is absolutely beautiful. It has remained one of the places I would like to go back and visit again one day.

Or possibly "evidence" planted to lead us to think they are ... it is far too early to tell anything definite.
When are the news agencies going to back-off the news-speak they adopted in (I think) the 1970's?
I always thought one "takes responsibility" for an achievement, like building a bridge or feeding the poor.
One "admits guilt" for commiting murder and mayhem.
I wondered about the "peace" that Spain would get by withdrawing their troops from Iraq. From todays headlines, it looks like they will still be targeted regardless.
I feel a sense of helplessness when individuals promote "appeasement" as a means of attaining security. I truly do not understand their thought process.
If I'm going to get blown up anyway, then it might just as well be with a fight.
