I'm learning about extension tubes and how to use them with flash and other forms of lighting. I was having a hard time understanding how to use the flash, dof, etc... I have been practicing and hopefully have learned a few things. I'm trying to improve my macros, your help is appreciated. Shot using D50 with varying lengths of extension tubes and aperture settings, with 50mm f1.8 mounted on the end.

These are pretty nice, especially for your first try at Macro.
The problem with flowers is that everyone tries to shoot them and it is kind of a cliche.

The DOF in these pictures is really really shallow and I would suggest using a tripod and increase your f stop to at least f8.
I loved the softness of these flowers and in general I would give it 7 out of 10.

Get the DOF right is probably one of the hardest things with macro as it's so thin. Shooting at f8 or smaller usually helps with that.

The last hyacinth image seems a bit soft though it is obvious what you were trying to focus on. Closing down the lens just a little more will help with that.

yup, i agree with what's been said. It's hard to get good dof with 50mm because you're so close to the subject. This one was shot at f16 and the depth is still way too shallow.

I agree with the earlier comments, and would like to add that f/8 will still deliver a verv very narrow dof at 1:1 macro.

I would like to add that I very much like the composition of the Moss Pink/Thrift picture. Like with any type of photography, composition is important. But many macro photographers are so busy controlling sharpness and DOF that they tend to forget about compositin. This one's really nice though.

thanks everyone. Several of these were shot at f11. I think the extension tubes add a lot of dof. I just need to practice with them and figure it out. Thanks!
