As a newcomer to photography, I bought my first photography book last week. I read a couple of chapters and found it really easy to understand, I highly recommend it to any beginners.

The New Manual of Photography
by John Hedgecoe

I agree that it's an excellent book. It's not an all digital photography book but definitely worth the purchase. Bought my copy at CostCo in January. Excellent reading especially for the SLR user.
