There are some photos I really like in the challenge that have nothing at all to do with the topic. It's a shame. Not that mine's doing great either but I know nobody can miss how it fits the challenge. :)
I didn't submit pic either because I felt that the details were not specific enough. I had taken several shots but none I though worked for that challenge and from what I've seen a lot of ppl didn't understand it either.
Well, that seems to be a very well thought out comment. I did not enter because, as per my own editing standards I did not have a good shot. But thank you pitsaman for having the best answer for all.
I think it's sometimes down to bad challenges & challenge descriptions rather than just pain bad photography.
I think the chance of capturing something decent within the criteria is pretty low even for the best of photographers....

Despite all this, in each challenge some people manage to create some great pictures, appealing, creative, inspiring, learning, for themselves and/or for others.
This was a tricky one and I've just finished voting and found it quite hard. I did enter this challenge with a pic I caught by chance. I think it captures the theme - I hope some others do too! :)
I've never given a one here before today. i can't belive how many entries were totally off topic.
Hahaha, it must be me... getting 2.x 30+ votes... its a last minute entry but I like my photo, its probably because it was done before, oh well, low scores doesn't bother me at all as long as I enjoyed it, as always :) Good Luck to all!
Yow... The weirdest part of scoring on this challenge was that the technically poorest pictures were the ones most on topic. By that I mean the 'snap shot' pics with marginal set-up, lighting and so forth. And a lot of the technically near excellent pics didn't "get" the topic or were stretching a lot... depending on the title to try to make up for a lack of emotive content in the image.
Very odd to score this one... some of the doggie and little kid pics were by far the best for meeting the challenge criteria.

I also knew as soon as I saw the challenge topic that I wouldn't be submitting. IMHO, the criteria and ability to get a picture that has mass-appeal is very difficult with a topic like this...
I was going to enter, but couldn't get an assistant and just could not get the shot I wanted with the timer. Was trying for a waitress tray on her arm with a big glass of milk tipping and spilling out of the frame. Made quite a mess, and tried several different methods, but could never quite get a decently timed shot. :( Still thought it would have been a good idea for the challenge.
I did not think the name of the topic and the description of what you were to photo made alot of sence..seemed like they were different, or something. Just did not make alot of sence to me.
But thre are some very nice photos...I enjoyed voting on them.
Well I have to say that I'm pretty scared after reading all this...it was my very first entry, I just hope it doesn't end up being one of the pictures that actually sucks that but ends up doing ok because it fits the challenge...only future submissions can tell, I guess ;)
This is only my third entry on DP. As I said before it was one I caught by chance and there was literally no time to think about a lot of the technical side of things. Also my camera is pretty much "point and shoot" (this is another bug bear of mine that I think people forget when commenting - ie that some people don't have fancy cameras!!)so I just caught it as it was.
So hoping mine is one of those not technically excellent but capturing the theme....;)

My shot is scoring the lowest of the any entry i have had, but since that is my expectation with this challnge, i am not disappointed. When one gets two totally conflicting comments back to back, you know you can't win. I thought of the kid and pet ideas, and then went a different way. I like my pic, regardless of the score. I have lots of good ideas for parallell lines, one idea, if i can pull it off, may not score well, but will NOT be of lines on a road, or railroad tracks.
I find myself straining a bit more to find "meets the challenge" in this one than any others in the past. I try to give the benefit of the doubt on the tough ones, but there are lots of them.
I don't give 1's for off-topic, but I do lower the score a couple of points.
There are some relly nice shots here though. As well as some creative ways of meeting the challenge.
Do you guys/gals think completely off topic shots should recieve ones??
Always. It is far too easy to score ok with a 'nice' completely off topic photo. Surely a bad on topic photo deserves to finish higher? At least they have put effort into taking a photo based around the challenge. There are at least 10 photos that deserve a 1 in the off screen challenge
