I have a giff of a round object that I would like to place on top of a color background in Illustrator, but the background is white. Used to know how, but it's been a long time. I tried opening in PS, then selecting and deleting, but that's not working. I guess I could change the color to match the background, but I'm not sure I'm keeping that color.

In PS, open the file and select the part you want to keep. Edit;copy. Open a new layer and choose Transparent for the background. Edit;Paste into the new layer. Throw the bottom layer in the trash. Now all you have is the object on a transparent background. Save the file as a PNG-24 file. That will allow the background to stay transparent so you can lay the file over whatever color you want.

Double click on the Background Layer in the Layer Palette. This has now made it a layer you can work on. Select your surrounding area that you want to remove, then press delete. Now save as a GIF.
