If there's lots of people who want reward creativity and artistic endeavour with awards, why not see if it can be integrated properly into DPC? (apologies if this has been asked or suggested before). Something relatively easy to implement but that recognises these user awards - perhaps a User Award medal section underneath DPC Ribbons in the User Profile awards (i.e. Ribbons, Hon Mentions, Brown, then User Awards). Users with awards would need to submit their artwork for their awards something like quarterly (to save frequent updates/admin) for inclusion.
The Posthumous Ribbons of the Week thread used to be a fun thread to visit...I suppose it's still "fun", but MAN it sure is cluttered now. Hard to tell what's going on and it's morphed into something different. I don't go there very often anymore...
Regarding you suggestion, I think the "awards" area of the profile page should be left alone - for official DPChallenge use only. If an individual wants to display other "award" icons, etc...they can do so in their personalized biography/signature sections.

All it is doing is demonstrating the number of people who appreciate non eyecandy photography/stronger artistic integrity, in that lots of people look at that thread, and lots of people want to contribute.
The key, imho, is to find a way to channel it all into something worthwhile - rather than letting this cultural divide between two main parties continue... Eye Candy v "Art".

I have no problem with many people wanting to contribute, and I love the concept, but think perhaps they should start their own threads so as to keep the Posthumous one uncluttered.
And I do not think that DPC should add these ribbons/awards to a persons profile. That sort of defeats the purpose of a Posthumous Award.
I think it would be a pretty sad day if DPC gave out awards for the worst photo in a challenge.
Bit too late then - Brown Ribbon is already a reality.

Huh? DPChallenge does not issue a gif "Ribbon" for the brown. If it does, can you point me to a user that has one on their profile page in the awards area?

I tend to agree, it was interesting when there was one person doing it - but how many user awards are there now ? It seems to have been diluted so far already, I don't know that going further really improves it.

It reminds me a lot of what you get over on flickr, now that you mention it. The logical conclusion would be we all give our own 3 awards out every challenge, right ? Perhaps we could then have personalised front pages, where our ribbon winners are the ones that appear, instead of the blue/red/yellow ?
Maybe then we could total up the number of awards someone gets and we could call that person the winner. Hmm, sounds familiar, somehow. I liked it originally when Don or e301 where pulling out shots they thought particularly worth comment and then commenting on. Now it seems to have moved in to being something else, which has diluted the effect or potential value.

You may be thinking of the special Honorable Mention ribbon given to all participants of the Rubber Ducky speed challenge that ran on April Fools Day 2005.

I don't think that we have cultural divide. It is just someone’s subjective opinion on what “Art” is and what Eye Candy is.
To be frank some of the stuff I see posted in the Posthumous thread is “crap” but that is just my opinion. The other thing that is starting to annoy me a bit here is if you happen to get on the front page of a challenge your image automatically gets a label of “Eye Candy” by some people.
The best way to reward people is to vote and comment if more people who vote “art” high then we will start the trend for higher outcomes.

That's what I think too. I only realized the other day that there are now about half a dozen people giving out awards. I thought the idea of posthumous awards was brave and clever and stood for standing against pedestrian tastes... then everyone started doing it. :-P Kind of like counter-culture eventually becoming mainstream.
