I've noticed that sometimes when voting, I am influenced by overall DPC standards, and I find my votes being what I think they will ultimately land at, rather than what I personally think the shot is worth. This narrows the score range and is unfair to the other entrants. I have to consciously try to make sure my votes are my own votes and not my interpretation of the averaged DPC vote.
Just wondering if this occurs with anyone else and is perhaps part of the issue with voting trends that some have brought up. (I do realize that some statistics show there is no trend.)
I have the opposite concern. What narrows my score range is the fact that I follow my very own nose entirely. Do my votes get thrown out by the troll police?
I attempt to vote each image on its own merit, and I believe that I can do this without bias for subject matter or your described "DPC standards." I've found my votes approximate the normal bell curve. I've likely given more 10s, 9s and 8s than 1s, 2s and 3s, yet I see my average vote given is about 5.2 ...
OTOH, one of my friends insists that his preference is to chose the best images (his winners) then vote the remaining accordingly. I cannot see how this is unbiased in any way.
One thing I have noticed when I vote is that if I have what I think is a good entry, and it is scoring low, then I dish out low votes in comparison to mine :)

Is that wrong?
Of course it is. If you really believe that, you might refrain from voting that challenge. Having said that, many have stated that consistency in voting a challenge is the most important thing.
I don't have an easy way to check that, and I don't think they are, but given that your average vote cast is one of the lowest on the site, it wouldn't entirely surprise me either. If you're concerned about this, I would recommend using all or most of the score range, and not just the bottom half to two-thirds.

Even when the images lie outside of the range you suggest?

After a challenge, if your votes are thrown out, does the red line appear where you voted, or is it gone because your vote isn't being counted? I have seen comments on photos where the commenter gave a photo a 1 but the image didn't have a 1 in the votes.
I make a first pass, first impression vote thru the entire challenge (fingers on the 4,5,6 keys, with an occasional pop to 7, 8, sometimes down to 3). Then I go back and study the 6+ scores and re-rate them, expanding the range to 6-10--this takes a lot more time. Finally, I take another look at those I scored lower than 5 (usually not too many) and decide why I had that first impression, and if it is a fair score or not.
If the image seems reasonable technically, seems to meet the challenge, but just doesn't "do it" for me, I go for a 5. The ones that really start to engage me get 6-10s, even if there are technical things.
I do vote in challenges in which I have an entry, and I give high scores in the same manner, with my average score for that challenge always exceeding the score I receive on my entry. I vote early in the challenge, so there is no chance that I will be unintentionally influenced by the score my own entry is receiving.
Besides, for me, the point of voting and entering is not to Win, but to give and receive feedback, to have fun, and to develop carpal tunnel problems from repetitive use of the [Update]

There are a substantial number of where you don't give a single vote above 5 or 6. Do you believe that all of the images in those challenges are "bad"?

Are you saying that 5, 6 and below represent "bad"?
How about 1="bad" and "10" good?
As noted on the voting scale, 1 is bad and 10 is good, but it's a continuum in between. A score of 5.5 is the middle of that scale, so when you score everything a 5 or lower, you're effectively saying that all of the entries are worse than average. That doesn't make much sense to me.

The issuance of a number value to me is something which rests with the individual, and only that person can determine what constitutes an "average" score.
Some may take issue with those who score under 5, but if the scoring is consistent, then I have no problem with this manner of proceeding. It would seem that in this instance, the scorer has standards that may differ from the norm, but that in itself does not necessarily make it bad.
With regards to middle of the scale, sadly there is no 5.5 score and as such I am compelled to dole out a 5 since I truly do not believe that such images merit a 6.
If your votes are dismissed by the 'vote scrubber', you won't see your vote indicated in red on the image page or on the challenge results page.
I have had my votes 'scrubbed' at least once (that I know of). I wasn't particularly happy when I realized what had happened. Some type of indicator, to at least warn you, if your votes are going to be 'dismissed' would be good.

"If" only I ever did. -I haven't.
But to respond in kind: If you awarded a "bad" image a 1 and a "good" one a 10, how then would you rate a "great" photograph vs. a "despicable" one?

I frequently will not see my vote in red on the image page, but it is reflected in the results page. I've been assuming this was a scripting error or something with the site, as there is no reason for my vote to be scrubbed.
Why do you score photos so low? It's wrong... sort your act out.

Totally agree and Zeus, seeing your average vote cast is almost a full 2 points below received I'd be interested to know how you would score your submitions in a challenge? Do you consider yourself better than all other fotogs on this site by such a margin?

If you're referring to voting only 5-6 or lower across challenges, you have.

My apologies. I thought it was clear from the context that I'm not suggesting voting everything a 1 or a 10. My point is that an average photo would be in about the 5-6 range, with "bad" being lower and "good" being higher. I have a difficult time accepting the idea that all or nearly all of the photographs here are average or worse.

There are quite a few challenges where you did not vote on 20% of the entries. For those challenges, your votes were not counted.

I'd consider the votes awarded my own submissions here as unnecessarily generous. And, no,
I have no intentions of conforming to anyone else's way of seeing and doing.
