Hi friends,

My boyfriend & I are heading to Joshua Tree NP. I've been there many times, but I always do the same thing:
We enter through Joshua Tree entrance and exit Cottonwood (10 freeway), stopping at all the views (exhibits) and even going up to Key's View.

I want to see something off the beaten path (though, by foot or Prius), and visit some places I haven't been. I want to take some sunrise and sunset photos. I would love suggestions and advice! :)

This guide is pretty good, from Photo Traveler. Haven't used it for Joshua Tree, but have on several other trips to other parks.

This book was good for general hiking too. Didn't get me lost last week.

I wouldn't get the slightly cheaper, Joshua Tree specific guide, by the same author. It is just a subset of the whole book above. Might as well get the entries for the other parks too - photocopy any bits you plan on using and leave the book at home.

I don't really have time or funds to buy a guide. I can barely afford the $55 hotel :)

John & I leave this Friday evening. We'll be there all day on Saturday and then head out on Sunday afternoon to get back to LA.

It's a quick trip, but I just needed to get away and see the wildflowers. :)

Well, I'd pick one then google it for more info or talk to a ranger when you get there. They usually hand out free maps that are reasonable for hiking, assuming you can read a map/ have a map and a compass.

The wildflowers were heading towards spectacular when I was in death valley NP last week. I'm sure joshua tree will be amazing, too.

According to DesertUsa.com, Joshua Tree is peak right now, but I am not sure where to be at what time of day for optimal light. Only a photographer could tell me that! I think rangers MAY know, but they think flowers are pretty all day (and they wouldn't be wrong) Heehee :)

I'll stop in at the Visitor's Center in the morning, but as this is my ONLY shot at wildflowers in JT, I don't want to miss the BEST light in the best place! :)

Has anyone else been there this past month?
