I think what killed the one you entered was that at first glance the flash looks harsh. It takes a second to sink in that it actually is technically very good.

I think the sugarbowl in the corner killed the shot, it looked not as i wanted so I added a vignette to make it even worse ;)
I actually like this one better than my entry and yes there's a black dog on the right walking out of frame. Illegal edit because the dog didn't appear in both frames used since a freakin car stopped smack in the middle of the scene. It's brighter than my entry so the doggie wouldn't get lost in the darkness.
