Recently i started getting aqua and red bands across my monitor. My PC seems to run fine but viewing images is difficult at best. I tried connecting my laptop to the monitor and it works fine, no bands. Could this be my vid card going out or something more sinister?
It sounds to me like your laptops screen if everything including pictures are fine when hooked to an external monitor.
First I would make sure you have you monitor setting correct. Then try updating your monitor driver. You may want to try updating your Vcard driver also.
actually, i used the same cable when i connected the laptop. i even opened the case and pulled the card and reseated it. updated drivers. nothing seems to help. Has anyone seen this before?
Are we talking about a CRT monitor? I was doing some geek forum searching to try to help you with this and the problems similar were all coming from CRT monitors. Unfortunately I didn't find any answers for you. I kept seeing the "bad cable" solution, and you've already said the cable seems to be fine.
If it is CRT hardware, maybe go to a thrift store and get a new cable to test with or a different monitor for $15. If it's LCD then.. well.. cry I suppose, heh.
I am no expert, but I have built quite a few PCs in my time. If the monitor is working okay on your laptop, then it would suggest your Video card is the problem.
What card is in your PC?
You can pick up good one cheap, so there is no real need to phaff about with an old one. It is worth just buying a new one for a few pounds/dollars.

Agreed. Does your motherboard have an on board video out? If so, disable the video card (or just take it out entirely) and plug the monitor into the on board port and see what happens. If it works then I think you've found your problem.
